چکیده

Broadcasting systems have to deal with channel variability in order to offer the best rate to the users. Hierarchical modulation is a practical solution to provide different rates to the receivers in function of the channel quality. Unfortunately, the performance evaluation of such modulations requires time consuming simulations. We propose in this paper a novel approach based on the channel capacity to avoid these simulations. The method allows to study the performance of hierarchical and also classical modulations combined with error correcting codes. We will also compare hierarchical modulation with time sharing strategy in terms of achievable rates and indisponibility. Our work will be applied to the DVB-SH and DVB-S2 standards, which both consider hierarchical modulation as an optional feature. Index Terms Hierarchical Modulation, Channel Capacity, Digital Video Broadcasting, System Performance.

Optimal DVB-S2 spectral efficiency with hierarchical modulation

We study the design of a DVB-S2 system in order to maximise spectral efficiency. This task is usually challenging due to channel variability. The solution adopted in modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 relies mainly on a time sharing strategy. Recently, we proposed to combine time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of broadcast s...

Improving Broadcast Channel Rate Using Hierarchical Modulation

We investigate the design of a broadcast system where the aim is to maximise the throughput. This task is usually challenging due to the channel variability. Forty years ago, Cover introduced and compared two schemes: time sharing and superposition coding. The second scheme was proved to be optimal for some channels. Modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 mainly rely ...

Hierarchical Modulation and DVB . doc 1 HIERARCHICAL MODULATION AND DVB - S 2

DVB-S2 is the recently defined successor to the current DVB-S standard [4] and DVB-DSNG standard (EN 301210); enabling new services via significantly higher data rates and allowing for a long-term migration. For unicasting applications, the DVB-S2 system includes Adaptive Coding and Modulation (ACM) techniques [1], in order to differentiate the error protection according to the propagation cond...

Analysis and Simulation of the Transmission Distortions of the Mobile Digital Television DVB-SH Part 2: Satellite Mode DVB-SH-B with TDM

This paper deals with the second part of the latest digital TV standard DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite to Handhelds) with focus on utilization of its advantages for the next generation of mobile TV broadcasting. In the second part the simulation model of DVB-SH-B, which is using satellite configuration with TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) transmission mode, is presented. The wo...

Power Amplifier Linearization Using Six-port Receiver for DVB-S2 Satellite Communications

A digital look-up table adaptive predistortion technique using a six-port receiver for power amplifier linearization is presented. The system is designed in Ka-band for a DVB-S2 satellite link. We use a six-port receiver at the linearizationloop in place of classic heterodyne receivers. The six-port receiver is implemented by the use of passive microwavecircuits and detector diodes. This approa...
